Supporting Healthy Early Development

At Yellow Kite Nursery, we believe that young children learn best through relationships, play, movement, conversation, exploration, and hands-on experiences.

For this reason, we operate as a screen-free nursery in Al Safa 2, Dubai. During their time with us, children learn and develop through real-world experiences, imaginative play, physical activity, social interaction, and meaningful relationships with adults and peers.

We also recognise that screens are part of modern family life. We understand that families use screens in different ways and for many different reasons. Digital devices can support communication with family members, provide entertainment, help children access information, and, for some children, supply vital communication or accessibility support.

Our aim is not to judge or criticise how families use screens at home. We want to share the latest evidence-based guidance so that families can make informed choices that work for their own children and individual circumstances.

What Does the Latest Official Guidance Say About Screen Time Under 5?

Recent guidance from the UK Department for Education and the Department of Health and Social Care highlights the importance of protecting time for experiences fundamental to early childhood development.

For children under five, health guidance encourages families to consider whether screen use replaces opportunities for:

  • Sleep and rest

  • Physical activity and gross motor movement

  • Outdoor play and nature exploration

  • Imaginative and creative play

  • Conversation and language development

  • Family time and emotional relationships

  • Hands-on exploration and real-world experiences

The guidance emphasises that, for young children, less screen time is generally better, while recognising that every family and child is unique.

The Curiosity Approach Dubai

Recommended Screen Time Limits by Age

  • Children Under 2 Years: Screen use is generally discouraged, apart from purposeful uses such as video calls with extended family or technology supporting specific communication needs.

  • Children Aged 2 to 5 Years: Health guidelines recommend aiming for no more than one hour of screen time per day, with less being better.

These recommendations are intended to support families, not to create guilt or pressure.

FAQs

We prioritise sensory-rich learning, Curiosity Approach principles, and natural outdoor experiences. Children build foundational cognitive, physical, and social skills best through physical interaction rather than digital screens.

According to UK Department for Education and health guidelines, children aged 2 to 5 should have no more than one hour of screen time per day, with less screen time being preferable.

Health bodies generally discourage screen use for children under two because rapid early brain development relies on physical movement, language exposure from human interaction, and real-world spatial exploration.

Start by creating small screen-free windows at home, especially during mealtimes and play. Offering open-ended items like wooden blocks or sensory bins helps your child build the independent play skills they will use at nursery.

No. Early childhood health and education experts agree that under five, physical, motor, and social-emotional skills are the critical foundation for future learning. Foundational abilities like fine motor control, problem-solving, and language development build the exact cognitive strength children need to master technology effortlessly when they are older.

Sensory play works wonders for relaxing tired children. Swapping a screen for quiet book browsing, listening to audio stories or calm music, water play in the sink, or simple playdough moulding helps young children unwind while keeping their brains calmly engaged.
